Profile

I am a 28-years old Brazilian-born Climatologist, currently undertaking my PhD degree at the University of Cape Town. I am interested in the land-atmosphere coupled system, its feedbacks and how it relates to Global Climate Change and Forestry issues. I spend long hours running computer models, drinking coffee and trying to understand what’s happening with the world. I personally believe that New Order is the best rock band that ever existed.

Experience

-

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN, Cape Town, South Africa – 2007-PRESENT

Where I currently earn the money to pay the rent. Here I focus on running regional climate models to understand the vegetation-atmosphere feedbacks on Southern African Climate, with special focus on the precipitation variability and rainy season onsets. I am also involved in a grid-computing project with IBM (AfricanClimate@Home) where users can donate idle CPU cycles to Climate Change research. Check it out if you have the time

-

BRAZILIAN NAVY HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE, Rio de janeiro – Brazil – 2005-2007

My military days. The Brazilian Navy runs a Weather Forecast Division that is responsible for forecasts of the South Atlantic west of 20˚W (METAREA V) and I was one of the forecasters. We also gave full support to United Nations Stabilization Mission In Haiti-MINUSTAH and the Brazilian Research Program in Antarctica (a place that I unfortunately missed the chance to visit when I decided to move to South Africa). Also, I was a part of the Numerical Prediction Team, where I would develop and maintain the forecasts models. Check it out.

-

UNIVERSITY OF SÃO PAULO, São Paulo, Brazil – 2004-2005

My MSc. years. Here I developed my interest in Forestry and Vegetation issues. My Thesis was on the impacts of Amazon Deforestation on Climate as part of the Large-Scale Biosphere Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).

-

UNIVERSITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 2000-2003

Where it all began: I learned programming, to run climate models, statistical analysis and started doing research on Climate Change.

-

Education

University of Cape Town, South Africa – PhD (in progress, date of completion mid/end-2010)
University of São Paulo, Brazil, MSc. in Atmospheric Sciences, 2006
University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, BSc. in Meteorology, 2004

-

Skills

Climate Research: Application of Regional & Global Climate Models to Multi-Scale Processes. Experience with: different models like WRF, MM5, ETA, HRM, RAMS and others; Unix Environment Computing; Fortran Language Programming; Statistical Analysis; Data Visualization Systems (R, NCL, GrADS and many others). Weather Forecasting. Skills to pay the bills.
